Skinny, Pizza Flavored Pigs in a Blanket

Skinny, Pizza Flavored Pigs in a Blanket
I can’t wait for you to try these savory, bite-size treats. It’s another one of my skinny twists on this nostalgic, beloved appetizer. These are my favorite! They’re easy to make with just a handful of ingredients. I used reduced-fat refrigerated dinner rolls and 97% fat-free all beef hot dogs. To add the pizza flavor, I used a little pizza sauce, Parmesan cheese and garlic powder.  Each has 44 calories and 2 grams of fat. I like to serve them as an appetizer, snack or as a fun meal with a salad on the side.

Ingredients

Ingredients for Pigs in a Blanket:

  • 1 (8 oz.) can Pillsbury Reduced-Fat Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls, see shopping tips
  • 1 package Hebrew National 97% fat-free hotdogs, cut int 4 pieces each (you’ll have 1 leftover)
  • ¼ cup pizza or pasta sauce, from a jar, see shopping tips
  • 2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese, grated
  • Garlic powder

Ingredients for dipping: Optional

  • cup pizza sauce or pasta sauce

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 375 degrees. Coat a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  • Unroll dough; separate into 8 triangles. Cut each triangle into 3 smaller triangles. Don’t worry if the shape of the triangle looks more like a box. It will still roll up nicely. Spread each triangle with ½ teaspoon pizza sauce and sprinkle with ¼ teaspoon Parmesan. Place 1 mini hot dog on the shortest side of each triangle; Roll up to opposite point. Fold in any dough sticking out.  Place, point side down on cookie sheet. Sprinkle each with a little garlic powder over the top. Repeat steps to make 24 total.
  • Bake for 15 to 16 minutes or until deep golden brown. Immediately remove from cookie sheet onto a serving plate.
  • Serve with pizza sauce on the side, if desired.

Makes 24 total

Food Facts

Pigs in a blanket are an extremely popular appetizer in America, for all ages. Did you know they may be as old as the 1600’s?  Despite rumors that it is an invention as modern as 1957, field laborers in the England of the 1600’s had what was essentially the same dish.  Putting meat inside of dough was an obvious solution for a quick and nourishing meal on the go.

Shopping Tips

Hebrew National 97% fat-free all-beef hot dogs can be found in most supermarkets in the same aisle where other hot dogs are sold. Trader Joe’s also sells them. Each hot dog has 40 calories and 1 gram of fat. Or, look for another brand of reduced-fat hot dogs.
Most supermarkets sell Pillsbury Reduced-Fat Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls where their other refrigerated dough is sold.
There are several brands of jarred pizza or pasta sauce. I usually use Prego’s.
