Ingredients

  • 1 cup apple cider or apple juice
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped into small chunks (I like Honey-crisp, Gala or Fuji)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 (12 oz.) bag fresh cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, add apple cider, sugar, apples and cinnamon.  Bring to a boil, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Turn heat down and simmer for 2 minutes.  Add cranberries and cook for about 10 minutes until berries burst and sauce begins to thicken.
  • Stir in vinegar.  Pour into a bowl and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.  It will thicken completely as it cools.  This sauce can be made up to 2 days in advance.

Notes

Makes 2½ cups or 10-¼ cup servings

Food Facts

Apple cider is commonly known as unprocessed, freshly pressed juice that’s often sold at orchards, Farmer’s markets, and farm stands. Unlike apple juice, bits of apple flesh and skin still remain and it’s the oxidation of these remnant which helps to give it it’s rich brown color.

Healthy Benefits

Fresh cranberries are very high in vitamin C.
Apples are loaded with fiber and contain both vitamins A and C.

Shopping Tip

I used Trader Joe’s Spiced Cider for this recipe.

Substitution Tips

Pears can be used instead of apples for this recipe. You can still use the apple cider or water, for the liquid.
