A Sloppy Joe is a popular hearty American dish with a variety of ways to make it. The most typical being ground beef, onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, mustard, and various, spices. Wait until you get a mouthful of this Skinny Sloppy Joe! It’s primarily made with ground turkey, onions, barbecue sauce, and tomato sauce. I recently updated the Skinny Facts and Weight Watchers Points Plus and SmartPoints depending on whether you choose to serve it on one of those high fiber sandwich thins or using a whole wheat bun. One Sloppy Joe using a sandwich thin has 307 calories and 2 grams of fat.
- 1 pound ground turkey breast (99% fat-free), see healthy benefits
- 3 cups chopped onions
- 1 (18 oz) bottle of barbecue sauce (I like Sweet Baby Ray’s or Bull’s-eye original)
- 1 cup (8 ounces) tomato sauce, from a jar or can
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 8 Oroweat Sandwich Thins, warmed or toasted or 8 hamburger buns, I used whole wheat buns
In a large pan or skillet, cook the ground turkey over medium-high heat, stirring often to break up the lumps until turkey is browned.
If using regular ground turkey, drain cooked turkey into a colander and blot with paper towels. Return drained turkey to pan. If using 99% fat-free turkey breast there isn’t any fat to drain. You can just blot it with paper towels.
Place onions in a microwave-safe bowl and cook in the microwave for 4 to 5 minutes until soft.
Add cooked onions to turkey. Stir in barbecue sauce, tomato sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil; reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 25 minutes. Stir a few times while simmering.
Spoon the turkey mixture onto each sandwich thin or bun. If you have any leftovers, this mixture freezes great.

Many say the origin of the Sloppy Joe can be traced to a bar in Key West, Florida, fittingly called the Sloppy Joe’s Bar. The legitimacy of this claim has long been disputed.
Sloppy Joes are known by many names across the United States such as Taverns, Hot Tamales, Barbecues, Steamers, Wimples, Yip Yips, and Slush burgers.
I used 99% fat-free ground turkey breast. But, just by using regular ground turkey and draining the fat, you can cut the fat way down.
The sodium content of this recipe is quite high due to the barbecue sauce and tomato sauce. If you are on a lower sodium diet, you should make this recipe using reduced-sodium sauces.
Oroweat Sandwich Thins can be found in most large supermarkets. One sandwich thin has 100 calories, 1g fat, and 5g fiber. They come in several flavors with the same nutrition facts. Use your favorite.
