I’m wild about strawberries! It’s strawberry season and these little jewels are worth celebrating. They’re red, plump, sweet and juicy. Strawberries are a member of the rose family. They’ve grown wild for centuries in both America and Europe. Fresh strawberries are available year-round in many regions of the country with the peak of the season starting in April and lasting into September.
Healthy Benefits
They’re super low in calories and contain no fat or sodium. They’re loaded with vitamin C and contain potassium and iron.
How to Choose, Prep and Store
Choose brightly colored plump berries that still have green stems attached. Don’t wash them until ready to use. Discard any moldy or damaged ones. Store strawberries in the refrigerator in layers separated by paper towels inside a plastic container or sealed bag.
The easiest way to slice strawberries is with an egg slicer. You’ll get almost perfect slices and very little mess.
