Skinny Tip of the Day

Print Friendly

Salsa is actually a very healthy food. Thanks to the tomatoes, onions and chilies, it’s heart healthy and can help to prevent certain types of cancer.  A ½-cup serving of salsa contains approximately 35 calories, 2 grams of fiber and 0 fat. Salsa is not just for chips either. Just a few spoonfuls of your favorite salsa can make soups, stews, meatloaf and chili burst with flavor.  Use as a topping for baked potatoes, add to rice with chicken broth, onions and cumin to make Spanish rice.  Stir into cottage cheese or yogurt and serve with carrot and celery sticks. Or, top a whole wheat bagel or English muffin with salsa, reduced-fat cheese and melt.  The possibilities are endless…What’s your favorite way to use salsa?

I always order salsa as a condiment when I’m at a restaurant – omelets, sandwiches, you name it! It’s a great way to add flavor without compromising nutrition.
